Our Greatest Inspiration: Clovis Harrod

From her small garden in Big Sur, she taught us about abundance, acceptance, and gratitude.
Clovis' lifelong philosophy that "there is plenty for sharing with others" became the spiritual foundation for The Big Share. Our food sharing dream was born in the dirt on Clovis' own Pfeiffer Ridge land. During the pandemic, as our remote community struggled with job loss and the lack of grocery stores, the abundance in our garden transformed into a vital community lifeline. Until the very end of her life, Clovis brought food from her small garden and orchard to The Big Share every Monday.

Celebration was particularly important to Clovis, and she sure knew how to do it. She and Grady, her husband of 42 years, could make a small picnic or a giant party feel like the most important place you had ever been.
They celebrated their own birthdays for the whole month of April, every year.
When Clovis "took her trip", as she proclaimed it, on April 1st, 2025, she was almost 94 years old.
Those of us who still live on Clovis' land are able to feel her abundant spirit every day. It is our mission to keep her generosity alive.
We intend to celebrate her every April, for ALL of April, just as she and Grady did.
We hope you will join us.
